چکیده

We have experimentally evidenced an elementary charge fission, in which an elementary charge in an integer quantum Hall (IQH) system breaks up into fractional charges at a local fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state. Shot-noise measurements establish the e/3-charge of tunneling quasiparticles through the local FQH state, which is prepared in a low-density region near a quantum point contact (QPC) in an IQH system. The shot noise is proportional to T1(1 − T1) over a wide range of T1 (1/3 < T1 < 0.9), where T1 is the transmission probability of the IQH edge channel. This binomial distribution factor indicates that fractional quasiparticles emerge from the IQH system, and thus the tunneling process can be referred to as the elementary charge fission. The study of this fission process will enable us to elucidate the dynamics of Laughlin quasiparticle creation in FQH systems.

noise in coupled dots and the “ fractional charges ”

We consider the problem of shot noise in resonant tunneling through double quantum dots in the case of interacting particles. Using a many-body quantum mechanical description we evaluate the energy dependent transmission probability, the total average current and the shot noise spectrum. Our results show that the obtained reduction of the noise spectrum, due to Coulomb interaction, can be inter...

Typeset Using Revt E X

Observation of the e/3 fractionally charged Laughlin quasiparticles. Abstract The existence of fractional charges carrying the current is experimentally demonstrated. Using a 2-D electron system in high perpendicular magnetic field we measure the shot noise associated with tunneling in the fractional quantum Hall regime at Landau level filling factor 1/3. The noise gives a direct determination ...

Electron–electron interactions in the chemical bond: “1/3” Effect in the bond length of hydrogen molecule

The prominent “1/3” effect observed in the Hall effect plateaus of twodimensional electron gas (2DEG) systems has been postulated to indicating 1/3 fractional charge quasiparticle excitations arising from electron–electron interactions. Tunneling shot-noise experiments on 2DEF exhibiting fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) shows evidence for tunnelling of particles with e and e/3 charges for ...

Effects of decoherence on the shot noise in carbon nanotubes

We study the zero frequency noise in an interacting quantum wire connected to leads, in the presence of an impurity. In the absence of quasiparticle decoherence the zerofrequency noise is that of a non-interacting wire. However, if the collective, fractionallycharged modes have a finite lifetime, we find that the zero-frequency noise may still exhibit signatures of charge fractionalization, suc...

Excitons in incompressible quantum liquids

A theory of excitons in semiconductors in the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) Effect regime is presented. Non-conventional properties of magnetoexcitons in this regime originate from the fact that elementary excitations of the FQH phases carry fractional charges. Properties of excitons strongly depend on the separation h between electron and hole confinement planes. When this separation is not to...
